Severe eczema may require treatment with strong topical medication. The usual medical treatment is the use of Corticosteroids that are highly effective in controlling symptoms. Anti-histamines can reduce itching and therefore prevent secondary wounding of the affected area. However, if wounding has already occurred due to scratching, anti-biotics can prevent infection. Skin moisturizers are surprisingly helpful by preventing dryness which worsens an eczema attack.
